Either as straight styles or in their myriad blends, there’s a lot to love about grenache and shiraz, which tend to go hand in hand. Ahead, James Halliday brings these two red grape varieties to the fore, spotlighting McLaren Vale as chief producers overall of both styles.
James Halliday on the 2020 Shiraz and/or Grenache Varietal Winners
“This category brings grenache and its siblings into the frame, either as a variety or as a two or three-way blend. I am hugely excited by the changing approach to grenache, particularly by appropriate vineyard management and a clear vision of the winemaking style. The results of this approach has been, and will continue to be, more elegant, perfumed versions of the varieties. McLaren Vale is presently the chief custodian of the best shiraz blends, but it shouldn’t rest on its laurels and assume that others can’t play the same game – because they can.”
