Domaine Thomson

New Zealand | Central Otago

Our Review

The Domaine Thomson story began in ’00 with the establishment of a 14ha vineyard above Lake Dunstan in Central Otago. However, back then, the brand was called Surveyor Thomson, after the late co-founder David Hall-Jones’ great-great-grandfather, who was NZ’s first Surveyor General. In ’13, Hall-Jones and his wife, PM Chan, acquired additional sites in Burgundy (in Gevrey-Chambertin, Saint-Aubin, and Mercurey, plus two Bourgogne AOC vineyards), and today wines made in both NZ and France are released under the Domaine Thomson label. Dean Shaw (The Central Otago Wine Company) has made the local wines (pinot noir only) since inception; Armand Heitz and Gerard Quivy make the French wines (pinot noir, chardonnay and crémant). All three take a minimal-intervention approach to winemaking, letting each site shine. -ANNA WEBSTER
