King Island Distillery Bass Strait King Island Limoncello
King Island’s limoncello is clean and translucent in appearance, which matters to some people and is rare in this style, so worth mentioning. Candied lemon peel and greener notes of lemon leaf dominate the aromas of this liqueur, with just a little bit of spirit poking through, but it’s more of a mineral character than any aggressive ethanol. While it may call to mind high-end hand soap, it’s the kind that smells good enough to eat rather than the unfortunate detergent note of many craft limoncellos. Sweet and a touch bitter on the palate, this product does not have the weight of some others in the category, but there’s a refreshing lightness that lends itself to use in spritzy cocktails where others rely on lots of sugar. I wouldn’t necessarily reach for this as a stand-alone product, but its brightness and controlled sweetness occupy an important niche.
