Ambra Bank Street Social Blood Orange Amaro
Amaro Sottoterra is a collaboration between Ambra and Adelaide cocktail institution Bank St. Social. Sottoterra means 'underground' in Italian, an apt name for a spirit crafted for this subterranean den hidden beneath the streets of Adelaide’s West End. Based on blood orange, this product sits well within the Ambra wheelhouse of showcasing SA’s outstanding citrus fruit. And, unsurprisingly to anyone who’s ever met a cocktail bartender, this collaboration is significantly higher in alcohol than most of Ambra’s other spirits, weighing in at a robust 34.5%. That alcohol is really nicely controlled on the rich, earthy nose that reveals layers of fruit and woody spice. The palate is sweet and complex, offering a wealth of blood orange marmalade and warming spices. I can envision this working perfectly in mixed drinks that would call for a rich, citrusy amaro like Montenegro.
