Burdekin Distillery Premium Aged Rum
Burdekin’s Premium Aged Rum is the only product in their core range distilled from molasses rather than fresh sugarcane juice. It can also use the word 'rum' on the label under Australian law, because it has been matured for at least two years, in this case in American oak ex-bourbon barrels. While Burdekin admits that this product is a work in progress as it develops its production capabilities over time, it still shows great promise, with a bright nose of grapefruit-flavoured hard lollies and almost floral oak. The palate is bright and dry, too, with lots of cinnamon and sandalwood spice. While it could use a little more depth and richness to balance all that bright spice, this is still a great Australian version of the lighter-style aged rums produced in the Caribbean, and is probably more approachable for less adventurous drinkers than the rest of Burdekin's range.
