The 50 best fiano wines in Australia right now

By Andrew Zuccala

Australians are increasingly falling in love with fiano. Find the best examples to try here.

Fiano is surging in popularity across Australia right now, with both producers and consumers falling in love with the white Italian variety. One reason for fiano’s great appeal is that – depending on the grape’s growing conditions – it will embrace many different flavour profiles, from steely, fresh and mineral to indulgently lush, textural and rich.

It was the CSIRO who imported the first fiano vines in 1978, which Coriole then used for its own commercial plantings. However, most Australian fiano comes from a different source – the VCR 3 clone, which Chalmers brought in years later. This is a popular choice for new plantings as it produces smaller fruit with greater intensity of flavour.

And while fiano is being grown all over Australia, McLaren Vale is overwhelmingly leading the charge when it comes to producing the best fiano wines. Check out the list below to see how the region dominates, but make sure you also sample examples from Adelaide HillsAlpine ValleyClare ValleyGeographeHeathcoteHilltopsHunter Valley and Langhorne Creek
