Australia reigns supreme in producing various wine styles due to our diverse, expansive, and evolving climate. However, chardonnay gleams brightest, thanks to our ability to make it well, within many regions, and under many guises.
As the third largest grower of the variety in the world, after France and the USA, we are truly spoilt for choice. From the bounty of Margaret River, you’ll find estates steeped in history: Vasse Felix, Xanadu, and Leeuwin Estate – icons of the region. Tasmania's supreme cool climate produces wines that are tightly coiled in youth and built for ageing, like those crafted by Tolpuddle, Stefano Lubiana, and Holyman.

In recent years, we have seen a trend away from heavier oak application, and it’s an exciting time of discovery for wine enthusiasts. Now, we can observe the true expression of the region and clone in the glass, with the ability to self-educate on personal preferences. Do you prefer the power and concentration associated with the Gin Gin clone from Margaret River? Perhaps you'll also enjoy Beechworth chardonnay’s flinty and textural examples made from the Mendoza clone.
Below, you'll find 33 new tasting notes celebrating chardonnay from across the country for World Chardonnay Day, May 22.
