Giaconda is releasing four new wines on April 15 – with its famed chardonnay expected to sell out within minutes

Owner and winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner shares some of his thoughts on this trying vintage, and we reveal Halliday taster Jeni Port's scores.

Giaconda has become a Beechworth legend – consistently making some of the country’s best wines which are prized by local and international collectors.

And the coming four releases are expected to be just as sought after. These include the 2023 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay, 2023 Estate Vineyard Roussanne, 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir and the 2022 Beechworth Nebbiolo

Each of these will become available to purchase through Giaconda's online store at 8am on April 15, and are expected to go fast (especially the chardonnay, which has previously sold out within five minutes). If you want one of these wines, be sure to mark your calendar and set an alarm.

Speaking of these vintages, owner and winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner shared, "2023 was the last in a series of La Niña vintages and a great season for chardonnay. It was relatively cool throughout, with good rain early on. The last month prior to harvest was drier, enabling the fruit to ripen slowly and develop very intense flavour.

Giaconda's Rick KinzbrunnerEven though this was a challenging vintage for Victoria, Rick Kinzbrunner and his team managed to bottle some incredible wines.

“Those same conditions suited roussanne – which is a late-ripening variety – and remained stress-free until picking in the second week of April.

“2022 was an ideal season for nebbiolo, also cool with good rainfall enabling another very long ripening season. This wine was fermented in amphorae with a long maceration adding to the overall complexity.

“Great attention to detail in the vineyard and rigorously adhering to traditional winemaking methods has paid off during a couple of challenging seasons.”

Jeni Port's Giaconda tasting notes

Giaconda Estate Vineyard Chardonnay 2023

In challenging Victorian vintages like '23 – cool and wet – the cream rises, quality producers standing up. At Giaconda, we see another stunner of a chardonnay released, a classic work of art that delivers a bouquet of citrus blossom scents with intense Meyer lemon, grapefruit pith, preserved lemon, white peach, nectarine and crushed stone. Has real presence and an immediate sense of concentration. The longer it remains open, the more it reveals, an ongoing treat of complexity in nectarine, peach, toasted almond and gentle spice with a stunning lemon butter-like richness and more, edged in finely laced acidity. Exquisite. – Jeni Port, 98 points

RRP $215  | Drink to 2039

Giaconda Estate Vineyard Roussanne 2023

A grape transformed, roussanne sets its own course deep into serious wine territory under the guidance of Rick and Nathan Kinzbrunner. The fuller-bodied variety requires full ripeness and it gets it, eliciting scents embracing the floral and the rich in apricot, yellow peach, citrus, baked pear and spice with a whisper of green almond. Complexity ensues on a palate that is texturally inviting, like crushed velvet on the tongue. Roussanne brings base notes in beeswax, canelé, apple and Asian pear lifted by higher-pitched florals, including the herbal with a lingering savoury, waxy note. Moves with ease against a backbone of fresh-cut acid with a hint of tannic grip. Magical. – Jeni Port, 96 points

RRP $95 | Drink to 2037

Giaconda Beechworth Nebbiolo 2022

Offers power and grace with truly beautiful perfume and aromatics. They are a feature of the wine, so too some of the firmest tannins in the business. I gave the wine four hours and a decent decant before a reveal. The scent beguiles in aromatic rose, pressed flowers, cranberry, cherry, violet and winter herbs. This is a youngster in nebbiolo terms and, while the structure is set, it will take its own time for the rest like a true nebbiolo: red fruits, rosehip, anise, dusty cocoa, earth and gentle woodsmoke before a rousing long finish dressed in amaro and bitter-sweet herbs. A wine for tomorrow rather than today. – Jeni Port, 97 points

RRP $120 | Drink to 2043
